In conversation with Molefi Kete Asante
MK Asante is a writer, filmmaker, and hip-hop artist, and recipient of the Langston Hughes Award. His books include It’s Bigger Than Hip Hop, the poetry collection Like Water Running Off My Back, and the bestselling memoir Buck, the “brilliant and always engaging” (Los Angeles Times) story of his harsh but transcendent path from the streets of North Philadelphia to artistic liberation. His documentary film The Black Candle, co-written with Maya Angelou, illuminates the relevance of the principles of Kwanzaa. Asante is the host and co-executive producer of While Black, a Snap Original docuseries co-produced by NBCUniversal. His essays on art, technology, and culture have appeared in The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and USA Today. His latest book began as a series of raw and inspirational letters written in a Temple University Hospital emergency room as his nephew Nasir fought for life after being shot nine times. In those moments, Asante realized he had to tell his brother’s son the truth about his father, Uzi, who Nasir had never met.
Molefi Kete Asante is a professor in the department of Africology at Temple University, where he created the first PhD Program in African American Studies in 1988. Also the president of the Molefi Kete Asante Institute for Afrocentric Studies, he is Professor Extraordinarius at the University of South Africa, was the first director of UCLA’s Center for Afro-American Studies, and is the founder of The Molefi Kete Asante Institute for Afrocentric Studies, a thinktank in Philadelphia. With more than 100 books and 500 articles published, Asante has been recognized as one of the 10 most widely cited African scholars, and he was the founding editor of the Journal of Black Studies, where he served for 53 years. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his scholarship and activism, has appeared on television programs across five continents, and has consulted for several heads of state in Africa.

"“in a liberal democracy, you are free to decide what the meaning of life is, you’re free to pursue whatever your dreams are….” Oh, yeah. In fact, in a liberal democracy/free-wheeling capitalism, you are free to decide whatever the Political and Corporate marketing allows you to choose from: Ŝhould I drink Coca-Cola or Pepsi-Cola, Ŝhould I vote Democrats or Republicans, Ŝhould I be Male/Female/non-binary, straiĝht, Gay (in the sexual realm, you have more variety than in the party politics arena), Ŝhould I dye my hair purple or blue? The list goes on. These so-called ĉhoices are Either Preordained, rigged or irrelevant/frivolous. The important ĉhoices occur elsewhere, done by other (powerful) people who know better……

Terrific subject, and probably a good book. But there are glaring instances where the author exaggerates things quite a lot. For example, the flatness of LIGO mirrors is about a thousandth of a wavelength of light, which is a hundred times better than that of ordinary commercial optical components. That is really, really good and worthy of admiration, but nowhere near the absurd 38 digits after the decimal point mentioned here at 22:48. The sensitivity of LIGO, its ability to detect stretching of spacetime, is many times greater than the flatness of the mirrors, but even that is "only" about 20-22 zeros after the decimal point. The oil pipe in the Trent 900 engine burst because it was *much* thinner than it should have been. About 0.35 mm instead of 0.9 mm. The acceptable manufacturing error was 0.1 mm. One micrometer off which was mentioned here at 40:15 would not have made any difference whatsoever.

Wonderful interview. I have the book but it's a different experience when can hear the author sit and transcribe the thoughts behind their written work. This book really takes you through a time capsule into BLACK EXCELLENCE. I love everything about the book, author, and interview. David Brooks: You stated that there was nothing you could have said to your friend to stop his suicide. I strongly agree with you. As someone who has been in deep depression, as you said, it is a distortion of reality. It’s hard enough to have it during normal times but during Covid (and after) therapists and psychiatrists were not taking new patients. That didn’t change till 2022.
